What to Expect at Your First Rust Check Winnipeg Appointment
Not sure what happens when you bring your vehicle in for rust protection? Here's exactly what to expect — from the moment you pull in to the moment you drive away.
What to Expect at Your First Rust Check Winnipeg Appointment
So you’ve decided to stop letting Manitoba winters win. Good call. But if you’ve never had a rust protection treatment done before, it’s natural to wonder what actually happens when you show up. Is it like a car wash? Do you leave the vehicle? Does it smell weird after?
Here’s the full rundown — no surprises.
Step 1: Book Your Appointment
You can book online or give us a call at (204) 786-7878. We’re located at Madison Car Wash on St. James Street, so we’re easy to find.
Block off about an hour for your visit. The treatment itself doesn’t take that long, but we do the job properly — no rushing, no skipped spots.
Step 2: Pull In and Check In
When you arrive, one of our technicians will check in with you and confirm what service you’re getting. If it’s your first time, this is a great moment to ask any questions — what areas get treated, whether your specific vehicle has any known rust-prone spots, that kind of thing. We know Winnipeg vehicles, and we’re happy to talk through it.
You don’t need to clean out your car or do any prep work. Just show up.
Step 3: The Vehicle Goes Up on the Hoist
We raise your vehicle so our technicians can access the entire undercarriage properly. This is where the real work happens — the parts you never see are the parts that rust first.
The Rust Check oil-based formula gets applied to:
- The full undercarriage and frame rails
- Door cavities and body seams
- Wheel wells and fender areas
- Any other cavities or crevices where moisture and salt like to hide
The formula is designed to penetrate and creep — it works its way into seams, spot welds, and tight spaces where brushes and sprays can’t reach. That’s the whole point of an oil-based treatment versus a rubberized coating that just sits on the surface.
Step 4: Drain Holes Get Cleared
Here’s a step that a lot of shops skip — and it matters.
Your vehicle has small drain holes at the bottom of its doors and body panels. These exist so that water that gets inside can drain out rather than pool and rot the metal from the inside. Over time, those holes get plugged with road grime, debris, and old product buildup.
We clear them. Every time.
Why does this matter? Because a plugged drain hole turns your door into a little rust incubator. Water gets in, can’t get out, and silently eats through the metal over months and years. Clearing those holes is a small step that makes a big difference in how long your protection actually lasts.
Step 5: A Quick Once-Over
Before we bring the vehicle down, the technician does a walkthrough to make sure everything’s been covered properly. We’re not a production line — we’d rather take an extra few minutes than miss a spot.
Step 6: A Brief Drying Period
Once the vehicle is back on the ground, we’ll let you know if there’s any brief wait before you drive away. The formula needs a little time to settle, and we’ll give you a heads-up on anything to expect in the first day or two — like a bit of dripping from the undercarriage on a warm day. That’s normal. It means the product is doing its job, working its way into all the right places.
What Happens After You Leave
You’ll notice the undercarriage looks darker and slightly oily — that’s the treatment at work. If you see a few drips on your driveway in the first 24–48 hours, don’t panic. That’s completely normal and will taper off quickly.
One important note: try to avoid power washing the undercarriage for at least a week after treatment. A regular car wash is fine, but a high-pressure blast at the undercarriage too soon can displace product before it’s fully settled in.
How Often Should You Come Back?
Once a year, ideally in late summer or early fall before winter hits. The Rust Check formula is oil-based, which means it stays active but does gradually wear off and get displaced over the course of a winter. Annual reapplication keeps your vehicle protected year-round.
Miss a year? Come in anyway. Some protection is always better than none, and we can assess where things stand when you arrive.
Ready to Book?
Your vehicle is one of your biggest investments. An hour of your time once a year is a pretty good trade-off against thousands of dollars in rust repair — or worse, a vehicle that fails a safety inspection because of a corroded frame.
